Dunn Island- No Access

Published on 6/16/2013

As you may be aware, construction is taking place on the DNR's Coon Rapids Dam Rehabilitation Project. We've heard reports that some canoeists have attempted to portage onto Dunn Island, so any assistance you could provide in helping spread the word that access to Dunn Island is prohibited would be greatly appreciated. Here's the news item:

Coon Rapids Dam Project Underway
Visitors to Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park will notice that changes are underway on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Coon Rapids Dam Rehabilitation Project. Three Rivers Park District, as owner of the dam, is supporting the state's goals for the rehabilitation of the dam by cooperating with the DNR as it undertakes the project that will allow the dam to play an important role in combatting the threat of invasive fish species on the Mississippi River as well as making much-needed improvements to extend the life of the dam.

Construction will occur in 2013 and 2014. During the construction period, the walkway across the dam will be closed. A portion of the parking area near the dam also will be closed; however, the fishing platform, the Coon Rapids Dam Visitor Center and a trail loop located east and south of the visitor center will be open this year.

Three Rivers Park District welcomes visitors to Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park during the construction period, but asks that people follow all signs regarding trail and facility closures. Three Rivers appreciates visitors' patience during this two-year project.

There is no access to Dunn Island via land or water during construction. For the public's safety, boats and canoes are prohibited from the area of the river upstream from the dam where construction is occurring, and portages onto Dunn Island are prohibited.

Updated project information is available from the DNR at coonrapidsdam.net.
