The Far North Symposium is a day of storytelling and camaraderie among enthusiast paddlers. The event focuses on epic paddling journeys in wilderness places more than a day's drive from Minnesota.

The 2012 event will highlight Ernest Oberholzer's 1912 great canoe adventure - a five month canoe trip taking him from central Manitoba to Hudson Bay by way of the Thlewiaza River, down the ocean past Churchill to York Factory, up the Hayes River, across Lake Winnipeg and ending in the village of Selkirk, Manitoba. Many of this year’s trips will feature a portion of that route.

Held on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 in the Founders Hall Auditorium on the Metro State University campus in St. Paul, MN.

Paddling to Nueltin Lake, Manitoba:  “In the footsteps of P.G.Downes” a canoe trip of two women seeking adventure in an old Kevlar canoe. A route through history with lots of evidence of the historic past.

Jim Gallagher

There is a Polar Bear in my Vestibule: waking at 2:00 a.m. to a surprise intruder. Following all the correct procedures, this group of six had to contend with a determined bear 25 miles upstream from the Bay who had no intention of leaving them alone.
